What to tell us about the water loss
Start with what you have noticed. How often are you adding water? When did the change begin? Does the loss seem different while the pump is running? Has anyone recently repaired the pool or equipment?
Those observations help us plan the investigation, but a falling water level alone does not identify a leak or its location. Evaporation also affects water level. How we investigate a pool leak
1. Dye-test the accessible openings and fittings
We start with ink testing, also called dye testing. We check what we can reach from outside the water, then enter the pool to inspect underwater areas. Our process includes returns, drains, lights, skimmers and other sealed openings, along with visible cracks and previous patches.
We use black and fluorescent dye as appropriate. The aim is to investigate the points where water could escape, including small fittings that can be easy to overlook.
2. Isolate and pressure-test the plumbing
If dye testing does not reveal the source, we move to isolated plumbing tests. We separate the relevant circuits at the pool and equipment, then monitor the test with a calibrated plumbing gauge. Returns, drain lines, skimmers and other connected systems are assessed according to the pool configuration.
This is a technician-performed investigation. The exact test setup depends on the system; it is not a single test applied to every pool.
3. Check the equipment and surrounding area
Our investigation also covers the equipment area and accessible connections. We examine the exterior of the pool and surrounding ground for clues. A wetter or greener patch of lawn is something to investigate, not a confirmed leak location—irrigation may be involved.
4. Use listening equipment when further location is needed
When testing indicates a leak in a plumbing section, we may use a geophone and other sensitive listening equipment to narrow down its location. We explain the findings and any remaining uncertainty before discussing repair work.
Why the equipment area matters: a Murphy job
At a pool in Murphy, the owner reported losing about two inches of water a day. We found two leaks: one behind the filter housing at the pool equipment and another at a return-line connection through the salt chlorination system.

How long should I allow?
On-site appointments average about 90 minutes. Actual testing time depends on the pool, access and the issue being investigated. Include details about an attached spa, water features, previous repairs or prior test results when you book.
